Pictures of the horrible scene from the previous night haunted Noah as he walked through the halls of the great castle of Astrail.........

the previous night.

Noah had decided to take a stroll through the city, and wanted to go alone. Those annoying body guards that his mother assigned to him always made him feel uneasy. So he snuck out without grabbing the guards' attention. On the way out however he nearly knocked over a barrel. Thanks to his quick reflexes however he stopped it from making any noise, and placed it back into it's original position. All that was left was to get out of the castle without being noticed.

After a few minutes he made it outside avoiding notice, and started to wonder about the city. It was dead quiet, even the taverns were silent, and that was a suprise to him. How could a city with so many people seem like a ghost town? After a short while he came to the edge of town, this is when he heard a scream shatter the silence. It was as if a window was shattered directly in front of him.
No my baby, my child....NOOOOOOO......... the scream was interrupted with a sickening crack.

After recovering from the suprise Noah rushed towards that direction, only to find a vampire snap a small child in two. It feed off the poor kid, it's victim, hungrily. Vampires were few these days, and why one would even dare show in a city such as Astrail was beyond him. Noah drew his blade, and the vampire immediatly took notice as it illuminated the area. The fanged horror dashed off towards the woods, with Noah dead on it's heels. Just as it reached the forest edge it turned to face the young warrior.
You're a brave little fellow aren't you. You really should put that thing away before somebody gets hurt.the vamp hissed. I think not, now will you stand and fight or cower into the woods? snapped Noah in reply. Moments after he said those words three more vamires emerged from the woods. As you wish oh mighty prince. Know this, we will invade this land once again, and this time we shall not fail. We'll start by presenting our lord with your head. The one who spoke, charged Noah with inhuman speed. Noah saw a flash as the vamp drew it's blade. The boy barely dodged the creature's attack, and swung at it as it passed, but to no avail it was moving to fast. One of ther others followed sync and charged, fangs bared. Noah ducked and thrusted foward and up as it came at him. The beast disintegrated upon contact with the blade. So the little boy can hold his own, quick thinking. Let's see if you can keep it up, get him boys. The other two started towards Noah when two crossbow bolts impaled their chests.

The one who was doing all the talking turned to see to girls appear from seemingly nowhere, each weilding a crossbow. The vampires laughed at the wounds at first, however they were soon caught ablaze, it seems that the girls had the ability to weild magic, and that the bolts were only temporary distractions untill they were able to pull off the spell. The talker didn't waste any time. He set about attacking the girls. Noah recognized them immediatley they were his older sisters, Iris and Rachel. The vampire suddenly dissapeared, then reapeared behind Rachel and slashed the girl in two. Noah screamed out in pain, and charged the fanged threat head on. It was amazing that a human could move so fast, it was mere moments before Noah reached the one who attacked his sister. He stabbed at the vamp just as it pulled it's disappearing trick. Noah ducked instictively as the vampire's blade slashed at him. Noah flicked his wrist, the sword following the hand's movement and was thrusted directly behind it's master. The talkitive foe disintegrated into nothingness.

Noah sheathed his blade, and the illumination ceased, he then rushed to his sister, who was alread being held by his eldest sister Iris. Rachel's eyes were unmoving. Noah stood and turned towards the forest. His eyes swelled up, the hatred stirred inside of him, he made a promise to himself that night. The lord of the vampires would die by his hand, he would finish what the great Kain and his fellows could not. He would destroy the darkness.

...Noah exited the castle and made his way towards the castle cemetery. He arrived just as they lowered Rachel's casket into the ground. She had dies saving him, and he wasn't even able to thank her, or say his last goodbye. The queen turned and started for the castle, her entourage soon followed, she stopped as she saw Noah. They looked eye to eye, and Noah could feel her anger towards him, even though they stood ten feet apart. She moved on saying nothing to him. He moved over to the grave of his sister, tears flowed from his eyes, they rolled down his face and slowly dripped to the ground. Inside he was cursing himself for letting her die, he felt he was to blame. Iris turned and headed for the castle, It wasn't your fault brother, nobody knew this would happen...... she said softly as she passed him. He looked around, the only person left was the gravedigger, who was waiting patiently for all to leave so he could go about his work. After a half-hour of simply standing there staring out over the horizon, Noah turned and went for the castle...

The next day

Noah woke early, haunted still from the recent tradgedy, to sleep was to re-live it over and over again. He got dressed, and equipped and headed for the war room. When he arrived he saw the council was about to begin session.

Commander- My lord, if you will, have a seat. We are set to begin in moments.

Noah- I can stand just fine commander

Commander- As you wish m'lord. As you all know there are speculations that the undead is on the move once again.

Councilor- Can it be true? We know the prince was attacked just recently, but there is no evidence that it was the endead.

Noah- It is true! Had they been living you would have recovered their corpses. It was a vampire who killed my sister, and it was the same vampire who told me that they are on the move again.

Councilor #2- *whispers to Councilor 1* What would he know anyways, he's only a kid

Commander- There is also the matter of the woman and the child that our brave young prince rushed to save. They had fang marks on their necks.

"can it be," "impossible," "I don't beleive it." The council was in an uproar, how could this happen after so much peace?

Commander- Silence!

Noah- Stop bickering, that will get us nowhere, we need to come up with a plan, just incase this is true. Commander what is the status of our army?

Commander- Our army is relatively small, we cannot hold back an invasion with what we have.

Noah- We need more troops then, post signs in the city........

Councilor #3- That wouldn't be advised, we don't want the people in a panic now, do we?

A page walks in quietly and whispers something into Noah's ears. Noah excuses himself and follows the page out of the room........

Meanwhile...

All is as planned master, well nearly. The humans are worried about us, once again we have driven fear into their hearts, and minds.

what do you mean by nearly?

Well you see that fool Calis got hismself killed by the prince. However that is an acceptable loss, and he did something I hadn't expected. He managed to slay one of the three princesses of Astrail, the Warrior-mage Rachel.

Well I guess things didn't go as planned, but this is truley much better, when the populace discovers of the princess' death than they'll be asking how it happened. This will be good. Keep me updated Scythe.

yes m'lord, now if you'll excuse me I have to get ready for tonight...

The young woman sat, brooding over the small takings of the day. Enough to cover necessities, enough to restock, not enough to engage the thatcher to mend the roof. Candle light flickered casting dancing shadows over her handsome face. Brushing back long locks of deep brown hair, she counted the coins once more, then snorted and pushed them back into the leather pouch. Sun had set barely an hour ago and yet the tavern was empty of customers. Accepting the situation, Nell walked over to the entrance of the inn and let the heavy wooden bar drop over the oak door, barricading against any further drinkers that night.

She heard the floor boards creak above her as the few travellers staying moved around their rooms. It seemed that they did not wish for company either. Well, each to their own. She would not intrude. Going behind the bar, she lifted up the trap door that led to below the tavern. It was the inconvenient but only way to the kitchen and cellars. Quickly she checked to see if the serving girl, who she had hired that morning, had cleaned and tidied the area according to her instructions. It was a sorry mess. Nell sighed and shook her head. She would advertise for new help tomorrow. Now she had to restore order or rats would be attracted to the scraps of food that littered the room.

As she worked, Nell thought about the next day. It was to be a busy one. As well as opening and running the tavern to keep the few customers, who drank and ate there on a regular basis, happy, she wanted to visit the Castle to petition for an investigation into the disappearance of her father. Twice she had tried but had been turned away. It seemed that she was not the only one who sought help of this kind. Disappearances were becoming a common occurrence and little appeared to be happening to solve them. "But it would be a different matter if one of the precious royalty disappeared, I bet." Throwing the dish rag aside, Nell climbed the steps back up to the bar and moved to the windows to close the shutters that hung more for decoration. This was not how it used to be. Once you could leave your door open all night and sleep in peace. But suspicion and fear pervaded the city of Astrail.

Nell headed for the staircase that led to the upstairs but as her foot reached the third step, a noise made her stop. A scratching against glass. She turned. Again it came. Hesitating, Nell collected the candle and moved back to the window. Again the scratching, rapid and short. She lay the candle stick on a nearby table and opened the shutter. Nell could make nothing out beyond the window, the light from the candle obscuring the street outside. She put the candle onto the ground and looked again. Her eyes took a few moments to adjust. There was no one there. Pressing close against the cold pane, she looked into the dark streets. They were empty.

Pursing her lips, Nell closed the shutters again and shaking herself to rid her mind of any morbid thoughts, headed upstairs to bed.

Magnus sat, contemplating. He had survived the setting sun much longer this time, beating his old record by an easy ten minutes. He stood up, watching the last shimmering purple rays try to escape the horizon. I almost wish the night never had to come. But such are the laments of the simple. Now, to the rounds. Magnus left his small hut in the forest, drawing his cloak's hood over his head, and silently shifted through the woods towards Astrail. He paced the criss-crossing streets of the town, looking, hopefully, to not be needed this night. Unfortuenately, he was. The window of some random building felt the scratching claws of a full-blooded nightwalker. Magnus dashed across the street and tackled the monster, pinning it to the ground. Quickly, he dazed the creature with a strike against the temple, and dragged it's heavy body behind the building. Then he withdrew a torch from his pack as well as a flint. The monster was waking up sooner than expected, so he worked quickly. After lighting the torch, he noticed the vampire's eyes open slowly. Magnus held the creature down by the neck. What are you doing here? Why do you bother these humans? What do you care, filthy half-breed? I do what I want!
This coming from an animal. I might have let you live, had you repented. Tisk, tisk. A small smile spread across Magnus's face, and he jammed the lit torch into the vampire's chest. As it writhed, Magnus stood and turned away, the smile falling from his face. I wish it didn't have to be this way. He left the thing in the gutter as it incinerated into a mere pile of ashes.
The rest of the night was rather uneventful. He decided to go back to his hut early, to meditate on the day ahead. He also decided to attempt to do what he once thought was impossible: to go out in full sunlight. He had been preparing for this day for some time, and he knew that, from the patterns of increasing numbers of vampire attacks, he must venture into the Forbidden Hours. That tragic business about the princess just makes that all the more clear. I mustn't cower in the darkness anymore. He donned a black scarf to protect his face, and black gloves for his hands. Magnus meditated in the doorway of his yurt, so as to test his increasing tolerance to sunlight. Now, all there is left is to wait.

The room was warm and comforting, with the glow from the dying fire pinking the white-washed walls. Nell moved slowly about as she readied herself for bed. Humming a tune she had heard a young boy sing earlier that day in the streets, she sat and began to brush her hair. As she pulled firmly with the brush, she could feel some of the tension ease out of her body. Maybe some answers would come with sleep. The previous night had shown her images that were connected to her father's disappearance, she was sure, but they had been hazy and difficult to interpret. A moon shining over a forest, a young hand grasping a staff, shadows that seemed alive. Nothing concrete to help her discover what had occurred.

She moved to the closet in the corner of the room and was about to loosen the bodice of her dress when she heard a noise from outside. It was the scratching again, but this time at the window of her room. Slowly she turned, the hairs on the back of her neck standing on end. A face was there, looming out of the darkness. Nell's eyes widened as she recognised the wispy beard and gaunt features that denoted her father. In a swift movement she was at the casement, struggling with the latch, wrenching it open.

"Father!" With this cry she reached for the figure's shoulders and hauled him into the room. As he landed on the floor in a heap, Nells words tumbled out. "Sweet heavens, father, where have you been? I was so worried! How did you climb up here?" Her joy at his homecoming was confused with her bewilderment at the manner of his arrival. Her room was the garret room at the top of the inn. Kneeling at the old man's side, she curled her arm over his back and tried to help him to his feet. His first words came out in a hoarse whisper.

"Oh Nell, why did you lock me out. I wanted to come home, but the door was closed." The figure staggered to his feet and moved to the bed. She followed and knelt before him, worried eyes searching the face that was dimly lit by the low fire. He looked ill, as if he hadn't eaten for days. His skin was taut over cheekbones and his lips seemed colorless.

"I had to lock the door, father, there is much danger about. I am so happy you made it home. I had feared the worst when news of your disappearance reached me." Nell reached a hand to stroke the side of her father's cheek. His hand moved up to cup the back of her hand, then slid down to her wrist, his fingers circling it in a firm grasp

"And I am happy to be home, daughter, so happy, and so tired ... and hungry."

"Yes, yes of course. Let me get you something to eat, something to drink." Nell made to get up, but he kept hold of her wrist and raised her hand to his lips, giving an affectionate, fatherly kiss to the upturned palm. Nell smiled at the gesture and waited for him to release her.

"So hungry ... I have not eaten in four nights." This seemed to be spoken more to himself than to Nell. She sighed with pity for her father. What had he endured would be discovered later once he had eaten and rested. She gently tried to pull away her hand so she could collect some food from below, but his grip on her wrist tightened. And nails, long nails dug into the soft skin. He still had her hand close to his face and now, he bent his head down and, much to the horror of his daughter, licked with a long, deliberate tongue, the veins of her wrist.

With the scream of the shocked, Nell wrenched her hand away and fell back. In turn he leapt forward, his face contorted with anger and desperation, his thin lips drawn back to reveal sharp fangs. Nell kicked out, catching his jaw and knocking him to the side. Springing to her feet, she rushed to the fireplace and grabbed the end of a small log that still burned. Brandishing this infront of her, she stood, not wanting to advance and not having anywhere to retreat to. The figure that had once been her father was crawling rather pathetically on the floor.

"Pity me, Nell, pity me. I need you. I have to feed. I am dying. I ask my daughter to help her father." He knelt in front of her, his hands imploring. Nell shuddered.

"My father is already dead. You are a monster." Gathering her courage, Nell stepped towards the vampire, thrusting the fire at his face. With a scream of rage, he sprang back. Nell continued her attack, driving him to the window, forcing him out the way he had entered. And then he was gone, into the night.

Nell did not sleep that night. Instead she sat, feeding the fire, keeping it alive, and watched the locked window. With the dawn she would go to the Castle. They would not be able to turn her away this time.

Damn the pain!, Magnus hissed, gritting his teeth against the urge to flee into the dark corners of his hut. He looked out, watching the sun slowly rise. Black cloth covered his entire body, except a small slit for his eyes. They teared up, blurring his vision. He felt almost as though he might go blind. He tried to stand up. Slowly, he did, and with great, creeking pain, he took his first steps into the lit world. He walked deliberately, letting his muscles absorb the warmth. Yes. Good. One step at a time. He overcame his doubts, his perfectly rational fears of the light. It felt good, the warmth, despite the pain it caused. This feat of self-control would have made his old sensei proud, Magnus was sure.
He approached the town. It was unusual to him to see so many people out and about, but he reminded himself to keep his wonderment to himself. He walked in the shadows of buildings, watching the Astrailians from afar. They seemed to move with a combination of apprehension and relief. He was especially interested in the idle chatter. Sometimes, the conversations leaned towards vampire stories, snatching young maidens and old weaklings. They would rouse up at such things, denouncing vampires for all their worth, saying various masculine things about how fast they'd slay a vampire if they had the chance. Magnus shrugged at these, and moved on.
The pain gradually left, although he still perferred the shadows. He eventually took up a lean against a high stone wall. He didn't realize until marginally later that it was the side of the Castle, but he was left alone by the guards, mainly because of the spot he had chosen to wait against. He didn't know what he was waiting for, but he would find out soon enough.

Noah follows the page outside and shuts the door behind him. He turns to the page who bows. What is it? Noah asks the page. Sire, there is a girl here, she is complaining about the undead returning, and her father's disappearance. could it be so? Others are here claiming similar circumstances. Oh no, the populace is starting to discover it for themselves. How would they react if we don't reveal what they know, and someone finds out? Noah thought to himself for a moment. sire? asked the page. I am sorry, I was only thinking, can the queen not take care of it? Asked Noah, she sent me to fetch you to take care of it sire. It seems she is busy. Send her to my office.

The page bows and exits, as Noah begins to make his way to his office. Almost as soon as Noah sits down behind his desk, the girl busts in. May I help you miss..... Noah asked calmly as she hurried over and took a seat. Damn right you can help me, I filed a report over my father's recent disappearance four days ago. You have done nothing to find him, and at long last I have, however, he......he isn't alive. The girl realized she had cursed in front of the prince, but he seemed not to mind. Noah had the look of concern on his face. My apologies for the loss of your father, I will arrange for his funeral. It is the least I can do for the both of you.......I know what it is like. Noah too had lost his father, two years ago. He still carries that pain with him, for his father was allowed no natural death, he had become one of the undeath. His father had given Noah the family sword, and asked that the boy end his misery. Noah did as his father wished, not certain if it was the right thing to do and he regrets it. The peticulars of his death was not made public, he had an ilness and had died in his sleep. I don't think you can understand my pain.... you see... he isn't exactly dead.. Her eyes started to swell. Noah's face went white,

no, it cannot be. Could it be? No, no one should suffer like that, seeing into the dead eyes of ones own father while they are still moving is someting no one should endure. No it can't be Noah said aloud. The girl looked up, tears rolling down her face. What do you mean, no? Noah looked at her, just by making eye contact, he knew. They both knew, it was as if they could see into eachother, they almost shared the pain. Memories of that day popped into Noah's head, and a tear streamed down his cheek. As the tear rolled, he stood and turned to look out the window. I know what your going through, the same happened to my own father. Noah Instantly regretted those words, that was a family secret, the public wasn't to know. Noah wiped the tears from his cheek. I hope she didn't make my mistake, there has to be a way to reverse the process. There must be.

Noah turned back to her. Is he still out there? The girl looked up from her seat You mean my father? Yes. I am sure that he is, why? Then he will come looking for you, I suggest you be placed under protection, I can arrange quarters in the castle for you, or I can place a few guards at your home. It's up to you. His voice wasn't steady. She didn't understand, how did he know, did his father really get turned? What made her so special, others talked of vampires too, the castle cannot take in the entire populace.

It was at this moment that Noah decided that his people know, despite the politcal ramifications. This was a threat, a large one. They have had 100 years to recover, since the time of the heroes. The royals couldn't handle this alone, no matter how large their army. Why do you want to protect me? Noah looked back to her, Because, I know your pain, I will do my best to protect you and the rest of my people as well, mother dismisses the fact that there are vampires, so does the council, they say it's a fairytale. It's not, I killed my own father, because he didn't want to suffer the curse of the undeath. I couldn't save my sister from them last night. We managed to dispatch of four of them, but the cost was more than I can bear. The undead will pay Noah might have regretted what he had just said if it weren't for the fact the anger, fear, and hatred were controlling his actions, and his speech, now.

Brave words little prince, brave indeed, do you really think you can protect this girl? Or your people for that matter? A figure appeared out of nowhere, in the darkest corner of the room. Noah drew his blade and put himself between him and the girl. His weapon illuminated the room, and the figure in the corner could be seen. Black eyes, and hair jet black and spiked. His skin was pale, and he bore a scar on his cheek. When the sword was drawn Noah noticed him flinch a little. I am not here to kill you nor her, I am simply watching, continue...please. The figure smiled, that's when Noah saw the fangs, but how? The sun is up, how is it that he is walking around in the daylight? More importantly how did he get in here? I will continue my conversation once you leave, beast! Now now, that is no way to treat a guest is it? You royals have no manners, you ancestor would be disappointed. Noah was confused. What would you know? Well I knew him, Kain that is, he was a gentleman. Nothing like you, he didn't have noble blood running through his veins, nor the arrogance that came with it... Get...out! Noah charged the vamp. Just before he slashed the figure disappeared. Just like him, always trying to hack through his obstacles. See you couldn't protect yourself. Noah turned to see the vampire holding the girl by the scruff of the neck, she kicked back at him, making him lose his grasp, then she kicked again knocking him to the ground. Noah charged, jumped on a chair, and then jumped toward the fallen vamp, thrusting down with his blade. The vampire disappeared again. Almost children, almost. I shall be back, this I promise, however the sun is getting to me, and so I must retire.

Noah sheathed his blade, and turned to the girl. It seems you can protect yourself, I promise, we'll find a way to help your father. You may stay at the castle if you wish. I will be looking into our library to find what I can about vampires, and if there is a cure. You probably know this, but I am Noah, I don't think I caught your name? She could hear the sadness in his voice. Maybe he was telling the truth, the king, his father did die rather suddenly, with no history of illness. Nell. I wish we could have met under better circumstances, I'll leave you to decide whether or not you want to stay here. I will be in the library, once again my deepest apologies, I wish I had known of all these disappearances sooner, then maybe things would be different. Noah left her alone, and went to the library, scenes from two years ago, and last night flashed through his mind. On the way to the library he collapsed, he had fell unconciounce from all the stress...........

This was all rather sudden. On the positive side, Nell had elicted a promise from the young royal that help would be given in recovering her father, if he could be saved. That had not been expected. She had little knowledge of the vampire race and thought that once a person was changed, it was final. If that was so, that meant her father was, for all intents and purposes, dead to her world. Nell fought the grief that tugged on her soul at this realisation. She would not mourn him. Not until she saw his body in a sanctified grave. Noah had given her hope, though, that something could be done.

Nell remained for a moment longer in the room. The vampire who had attacked them was certainly gone. She had nothing to fear. No. Instead anger began to build inside. These people had known about the threat from the vampires. And they had done nothing about it. They were lying to themselves still. Noah' father, himself, had been turned and yet ... Nell shook her head, trying to comprehend the stupidity of those who ruled the city.

Yet she knew she could not remain at the tavern, waiting for her father to return and kill his only daughter. That would be foolhardy. Reluctantly she accepted that the safest place for her would be within the castle.

The mocking voice of the vampire echoed in her memory. What safety was here? A place where vampires could infiltrate, appearing out of thin air? More than swords and fire would be needed to provide true protection.

Uncertain of what action to take, she knew that she could at least close the inn. The guests there needed to be sent on their way and Nell had to gather some belongings. Leaving the room, Nell saw a servant and informed him that she would be returning in an hour, that she would be taking up the prince's hospitality. Hurriedly she left the castle.

Outside the castle walls, there was a crowd of people from the town, all with strained and worried faces. The guards were trying to keep order but the discontentment was palpable. As Nell pushed through the throng, she could hear their talk and the rumour of vampires was on everyone's lips. It would not take much for the town to panic, for a riot to happen. "And it would serve them right. How dare they try to keep this knowledge from the people." Incensed, Nell looked back at the castle and cursed its inhabitants.

Apparently, Magnus had accidentally fallen asleep. The sun was now on the falling edge of the day, and there was a mass of random people in front of the castle, all shoving and generally making asses of themselves. They apparently were trying to get in. A girl struggled through the mass, with a look of distain and anger on her face, nearly crushed by the burliness of some of the hooligans. He had to find out the situation. He came up behind one, and tapped him on the shoulder. Say, what's all the commotion about?
Huh? Didn't you hear? The king is offering a position as Champion Vampire Hunter of Astrail! All the Hunters from around the world are here for a shot at the title!
Magnus's eyes lit up. Really? What's their criteria?
I dunno, but you're gonna have to beat HIM for it. The man pointed over the shoulders of all the other Hunters to a massive, bear of a man in the center of the group. He's Ed the Destructor! Best damn Hunter there is!
A real professional?
No kidding! He's taken down more vampires than the rest of us put together, I bet!
Then why, may I ask, are you even trying, if you think he's so much better than everyone else here?
The tall man thought a second. Huh. I guess you're right. Are you still gonna compete?
Naturally. I may not be famous, but I have "taken down" a fair number of vampires in my time myself. I imagine I could best him.
You're crazy! Hey, Galgoman, check out Mr. Short Stuff over here! He thinks he can take on Ed and win!
Another large warrior looked over to Magnus. That guy??? No way!! You'd be just another bloodstain on his wall, kid! They both laughed a coarse, obnoxious laugh.
You think my boasts are empty? He would be lucky to die by my hand.
No way, man, no way!
I'll take him on, one on one, right now. That killed every conversation in the group. They all looked over, especially Ed. That is, if he will accept my challange.
The group dispursed into a rather large circle, Ed in the center, Magnus at the far edge. Ed laughed, Ha ha ha ha HA! You?! Against me?! Ha ha ha ha HA! I'll squish you like a bug, boy!
Then you accept. Magnus dropped his pack on the ground, and looked up at the giant man through his eye slit. He was easily seven feet tall, with arms and legs bigger around than Magnus himself. Then come on. I have an appointment for the acceptance of the Champion Vampire Hunter position in a few minutes.
Heh. Then let's make sure you're up to task! Ed whipped a huge warhammer out of his belt and slammed it down where Magnus was standing a moment ago. Luckily, he had been able to dodge, and now ran up the hammer-weilding arm to strike Ed in the temple. He was fast enough to do so without his target's noticing, but the blow did not help. It had, in fact, only barely bruised the monster, who was also now angrier than before. Magnus rolled to the far edge of the makeshift arena, planning his next move. He didn't have long before he was forced to dodge another of Ed's hammer strikes. They were obvious and clumsy, and he had no problem dodging them. At least, the first few. He was beginning to tire in the near noon sun, and had to concentrate on mere breathing. Then, he got an idea. Whenever Ed was going of a hammer strike, he'd leave himself open to attacks. However, in his weakened state, he didn't have the force behind his own strikes he usually did. On the next pass, he found his opprotunity. Magnus rolled between Ed's legs, and with a well-placed uppercut, he took the man down. Of course, he had to dodge again, as the Hunter fell like a tree, and would have crushed him otherwise.
Magnus stood up slowly, and dusted himself off. I believe you understand now, to never underestimate your opponent. He picked up his pack, and walked past the other Hunters and the guards, who both gave him plenty of space. He asked a passing guard where to go for the Champion job, and was directed to a fairly large office. A man, bristled with age and alcohol, sat behind it. I have heard rumors of you offering a position as Champion Vampire Hunter of Astrail. I believe I am your man.
What happened to all those other fellows who wanted the job?
We had a little heart to heart. I don't think their interested anymore, after seeing who they were up against.
Well, let's make it all official. Name.
Magnus Dreadweaver.
Number of vampires killed in the last year.
Hmmm. Sixty or seventy sounds about right.
Wow! I-mean, uh, desired salary.
Oh, I don't need money. Just food and books.
Wait a second, sir, you must be joking! You want absolutely no money whatsoever?!
I have no desire of riches. Sustanence and knowledge are my drives, besides protecting the kingdom, of course. Magnus let a small, but overconfident smile spread across his face. Of course, if that isn't palatable...
No, no, that's fine. More than fine, actually! The man could hardly contain his laughter and joy. He heartilly stamped the papers he had been writing on, and handed them to Magnus. You are officially our Vampire Hunter! Go and take these to Lord Dragonhand, and from then on, you will be our grand city's master protector!
Magnus bowed deeply.Thank you. Where may I find Lord Dragonhand? The bean-counter pointed the way, and Magnus followed the directions. On his way, however, he passed the library, and much to his suprise, he found a man, face down on the ground! He had the Dragonhand crest on his white cape. Magnus stepped over, and kneeled down beside him. Looking at his face...he was just barely a man, teenaged at the outset, blonde hair shrugging around his head. Magnus looked over the fallen man's neck. No teeth marks, that was promising. He flipped the body over carefully, and tried to wake the man up with light shaking. Softly he whispered, Sir, wake up. Sir! Wake up!

OOC: great post Mordraken, but the king is dead, well just say that the prince gave the order before going to the library, and fainting for RP sake

IC:

Dreams, he had fallen and hit the stone floor rather hard, but he felt no pain. He had already become lost in the dreams, visions of what the future held. If nothing could be changed about the current situation then Astrail would surely be lost. Astrail fallen to darkness? It would be a disgrace to his ancestor, and all of Avurlund. Avurlund the pinnacle of defense against the darkness, a land cursed eternaly. Forever fighting to keep the tide of darkness, those who would destroy the world, back. A hopless battle of time, everlasting. All for what? Something had to change and soon, however as other dreams, this one came and went. Leaving not even a hint of memory in the boy, the secret that was the future must be played out. Those that knew the current outcome might give up hope.......

The prince awoke to a slight shaking and Sir, wake up. Sir! Wake up! Noah rubbed his eyes, and yawned then stumbled to his feet, with the stranger's help. The boy dusted himself off and sized up this man. The stranger had the look of a monk, mid-length black hair and tan. Noah's first thought is that he hailed from the east and was here to study in the castle's library. Thank you sir, I know not what happened. I was going to the library when I suddenly fainted. I thank you for helping me, what would people think if the prince just passed out in the hallway? Forgive me I am thinking aloud, a bad habit of mine. I thank you once again. I was just on my way to the library, might that be where you were heading? By the way I am Noah Dragonhand, that is if you didn't already know, and you are? Noah asked, and offered his hand.

meanwhile...

M'Lady, M'Lynne, the preperations are almost complete. Just making my report, and since Wolfgang opted to be left alone, I decided to report to my queen. Scythe then bowed before M'Lynne. A messenger burst in. What is the meaning of this? The messenger bowed before the two and turned to Scythem'lord there is news of a rogue vampire being hired to hunt us down... Scythe was angry, no one barges in on him just for that, he was getting ready to put his scythe to use in punishment of this wee little creature that so proudly called himself an immortal. Is that IT!! You interrupt our conversation for just that? Do you wish to lose your "immortal" status? There better be another reason you came in here! for he is just another sheep to the slaughter! If he wants to fight his own kind, then I shall kill him myself. The messenger cowered before his master. He is a daywalker! A daywalker! the few who recaptured just a peice of their former self. The quest to be able to walk in the sunlight was long and hard, Scythe should know, it took him the past 100 years. For even though he was devoted to his lord, a peice of him wanted to re-live his past life. To endure the pain, and relish in the hapiness that is called humanity. He strived to be able to walk amongst those who had forgotten him so long ago. It was in this desperation that he reclaimed that small peice of his soul that granted him the ability to stand the sun. However only for small amounts of time, and only once every few days or so. I shall have to visit this one, did you get a name?? The messenger stopped quivering in fear, and stood proud once again. Our sources say he calls himself Magnus Dreadweaver. Excellent, thank you, dismissed. M'lady I must excuse myself, for preperations for tonights raid must be made. He bowed, stood straight, turned and exited the room, rubbing his stomach where he was kicked. The boy had that sword, the one that had stung him so long ago. When his race was nearly destroyed, he cursed for not being able to regenerate as other of his kind. He was more human now than he would like to admit...

I really hate the sun. His eyes watering despite the shadows of his hood and his tinted glasses. The dying rays of the setting sun seemed to stab through his eyes, and right into his brain. Shifting into a patch of shadow, Talione watched the various vampire hunters gathered in front of the castle. Most seemed like braggarts, like you can find in nearly every tavern in the city, slapping each other on the backs and swapped lies like old fishermen. Of course most of their stories went something like ... So I followed the foul beast back to its lair, and the next morning I burned the place to the ground! Sure, killing vampires during the day while they hid from the sun was the easiest and sanest way to hunt them, but what about the people they killed while you waited for them to goto ground? No more than a handful of these men have ever faced a vampire while it was awake and trying to eat them. he thought, smiling without humor. The disappearances that Astrail had been suffering sounded like a major vampire breeding surge. The city would need more than these token, vampire trophy hunters.

A knot of "hunters" had gathered in front of Talione, and kept gesturing at a hulking man at the center of the gathering. The woodsman watched as a short, black haired man dressed like a warrior monk approached the group. The monk talked to the men for a time, then the monk challenged the hulking brute. The hunters quickly formed a circle, always eager to see violence. Curious, Talione moved to the back of the circle. The bear like man, who went by the unlikely name of Ed the Destructor, had just been struck on the side of the head by his smaller opponent. Howling with rage, Ed lumbered forward and launched several clumsy, almost painfully obvious attacks, which the monk easily dodged. It was obvious to Talione, if not to the other hunters, that unless a miracle should happen, Ed was going to lose. Indeed, only moments later Ed toppled to the ground, unconscious before he hit. Chuckling softly, Talione picked up his heartwood bow and his boar spear. Still smiling, he watched as several of the hunters tried in vain to rouse Ed, then passed through the crowd, following the monk inside.

Asking a passing servant about the where to sign up as a Hunter led Talione to a largish office that reeked of alcohol. The source of the stench, an old man sitting behind a desk, looked up as he entered.

And just who would you be?

My name is Talione Pale, and I have come seeking employment as a vampire hunter.

Well, the other guy, Dreadweaver said that nobody else was interested in the position of Champion.

Nor am I. I don't care about titles, I just want to hunt vampires.

Grumbling to himself, the old man shuffled papers around his desk. This is most irregular! Dreadweaver is now the official vampire hunter. If you want a job, go talk to him.

Good enough. Where might I find him?

He should be with his highness, Prince Dragonhand. The old man gave Talion directions, then went back to shuffling papers. Folowing the dirctions lead Talion around a corner, where he saw the monk and a man in a white cape bearing the Dragonhand crest, talking.

By the way I am Noah Dragonhand, that is if you didn't already know, and you are? said the blonde prince, extending his hand to the monk Talione had come to see. Suddenly unsure of himself, the woodsman stopped, staring. How do you act around a prince?

Um... Excuse me. If you are Dreadweaver, and Prince Dragonhand, I have come to offer my services as a hunter. he said, bowing low. Then he stood, looking from one to the other from beneath the cowl of his cloak, hoping he hadn't made any glaring social blunders.

The warrior monk took Noah's hand. Magnus Dreadweaver your Vampire Hunter. Anther approached the two. He came across as a shady character. Um... Excuse me. If you are Dreadweaver, and Prince Dragonhand, I have come to offer my services as a hunter. Noah nodded, and turned to size up the two. So you two are the only ones found worthwhile enough for the job? I expected a higher turnout, maybe the situation wasn't as bad as I had thought. Noah was confused, they admitted only two, and the second was suspicious looking. Magnus, well met, and you are? The man looked over to the prince, however Noah wasn't able to tell, for he was wearing dark glasses. Talione Pale...at your service. Said the man, still a little unsure about how to communicate with royalty. Good to meet you. However, two isn't what I had in mind, maybe you could round up a few troops, you know anyone willing for the job. However, make sure they know that it will be no easy task. Fighting vampires is difficult, they are faster, and stronger than us. I personally got into a fued with some last night, managed to kill the four that assaulted me, with a little help. It was at a heavy cost........I am rambling now, I apologize. Please gather more troops, then return. You two shall command the hunter's regiment. I shall call upon thee for special tasks that regulars cannot handle. I shall be in the library. Noah nodded to the newcomer, then turned towards the library. Before he entered he turned back, Don't let the others know, but they are starting to come out in broad daylight, so watch yourselves. He let himself into the library, where he would spend the next few hours awaiting word from both them, and that girl. He started to pour over tomes of lost knowledge, gathering dust on the back shelves. The whole time, he was forced to relive the nightmares, those scenes of both his father's and sister's deaths played over, and over in his head. Sometimes distracting him from his studies. Hopefully those two would be able to round up some more men. Astrail's army although fair in size, was poorly trained. Partially due to the recent term of peace. People are just now starting to forget what a war, and bloodshed feels like. Why does all this have to happen now? Why me? Why them? Why?...

Nell's usual good disposition had been increasingly soured by the day's events. After spending the morning at the castle, she returned to the inn and fired the serving-girl, sending her packing with tears in her eyes. Next she informed the handful of disgruntled travellers that the inn would no longer be open and refunded their money. Finally she finished gathering together some personal possessions, including her longbow, and hammered a notice to the door of the tavern. Closed until further notice due to vampire activity . Bad of her, yes, but she wasn't going to hide behind lies and deceit. People needed to know what was happening. She grabbed her staff that rested by the door and headed back through the streets that wound their way to the castle. En route, she saw various shops and market stalls packing up early for the day. Everyone seemed short-tempered as they snapped at each other in their haste to close shop.

At the castle gates, the guards let her pass by without question. They seemed to be expecting her. A servant was waiting just inside the gates and led her to a room in the castle that was to be her place of temporary residence. It was sparsely furnished but had everything that a person needed - bed, table and chair, fireplace. On the table was a wide bowl, with a pitcher of water beside it. A small closet stood in the corner. The window in the far wall was tall and arched, much in the style of the castle. Nell tested the clasp on the window and it seemed secure. The door to the room was heavy and locked by a large key. Satisfied, Nell unpacked her small bundle, laying her bow on the table and standing her staff against the corner by the door. Quickly refreshing herself with the aid of the cool water from the pitcher and bowl, she left the room, locking it behind her and putting the key in the deep pockets hidden within her skirts.

A servant was waiting nearby and took her to a large banqueting room, empty save for herself and a few servants who busied themselves about the place, preparing for the evening meal. Nell was told to wait, so she sat on a nearby cushioned chair. It dawned on her that she may have to eat with the royal family. With dread, she strained her ears for the sounds of rustling skirts.

Don't let the others know, but they are starting to come out in broad daylight, so watch yourselves. The young Dragonhand left to enter the library. Magnus thought outloud softly, I should know that better than anyone.
Excuse me?
Oh, Magnus had almost forgotten. Which reminds me. You said your name was Talione, correct? You seem to already know me by reputation. We'll talk somewhere public. Follow me. Magnus led the rather large warrior out to a local tavern he had observed on his way into his current predicament. Raising an army wasn't exactly what I had in mind, but the more the merrier, I suppose. What a turn around: first a silent protecter, now the leader of a small army. What next, the vampire finds love in the city? He calmly smiled at the prospect. He also almost didn't notice Talione ask him, Why are we going to talk somewhere public?
One simple reason, my friend, which you demonstrated yourself. When people overhear you say something they might be interested in, they will try to come into your conversation. That's how we snag them; if they aren't interested, they won't bother to notice, and if they are, then good times for us, we just got another recruit.
And if it doesn't work?
Then we become more obvious with our subtle hints. Magnus entered first. If he had been any other man, he'd probably have run from what he saw in there: Ed the Destructor, drinking at the bar, with a good twenty-five of the other Hunters from before. This, however, was Magnus Dreadweaver. He and Talione sat at a table only some five feet away from the big warrior, and Magnus began talking loudly enough for Ed to hear. Say, it really is strange about Prince Dragonhand wanting a strike force of Vampire Hunters. I thought he just wanted one really good one, but he says it's not enough. He needs a whole army of the best he can find soon. I have no IDEA where I'll find so many qualified fighters for Dragonhand. I guess he'll have to be dissapointed. Ed turned around to look at Magnus through rather hazy eyes. Oh, Ed! I didn't see you there! I don't suppose you'd be interested?
Say whut?
I was just thinking, since you have such a reputation as a Vampire Hunter, why don't you join the army the Prince is starting?
I-I guess...I'm sorry, who're you again?
This fellow must be drunk out of his skull. I'm Magnus Dreadweaver, the Champion Vampire Hunter.
Really?
Yes, and this is my Second-in-command, Talione Pale.
You want a Hunter? Well, I'm the best damn Vamper Hunter around *hic*, and I know lots of Vamper Hunters...
Really Ed? Could you round up all the Vampire Hunters you know and bring them out in front of the castle as soon as you can?
I love hunting vampires.
Good, then bring all your friends up to the castle.
You can cound on me, man, I've got lots of friends. See? They're right here behnd me. I know lots of hunters.
I'm counting on you Ed, I need you to do this.
You got it, right fellahs? They're great.
Good. Let's go, Talione. Magnus waved to Ed, and left with his Second-in-command. He could tell what Talione was thinking by the look on his face. What? We have the beginnings of an army, right? I don't mean to be manipulative, but why shouldn't I push the advantage if I have it? He knew how he'd be spending the rest of the light hours.

Noah had been so wrapped in the books that he lost track of time. A pasge walked in and headed straight for him. Noah stood to receive the page, the kid bowed as he finisheed his approach. Sire, it is nearly time for diner. The queen wants you there. Oh great what does the old lady want now? She probably found out that I have spread word of the attacks. Noah sighed, I'll be there shortly, let me put these books back. Sire leave it to me, you must eat. Noah looked down, directly into the pages eye. I can pick up after myself, now go about your business. The page had a look of slight confusion of his face, but he did as ordered, and returned to his duties about the castle. Noah quickly stacked all the books back on the shelf and made his way toward the dinning hall. On the way he saw another page, just exiting the room. You there make sure my guest, and those two vampire hunters make it. The page looked over, the girl is in there already master, I will fetch the other two shortly. Thank you. The page bowed and started on his way again.

Noah entered the dining hall, the queen wasn't here yet. His two sisters had just entered on the opposite side, and took their seats, beside that of the queens. Noah took his place at the other end of the long table.

After a short period time he motioned for Nell to take a seat next to him, so he might have somone to talk to. Soon after she took a seat, the two hunters entered. Noah motioned them to him, and asked they sit opposite of Nell. A few councilers entered and took places at the table. Thank you for coming, the least we can do is treat our guests to a meal. The queen is probably going to chide me for hiring you two, and letting you into the castle. She knows the truth though, don't let her fool you. Noah looked down the table to Isis, she didn't look to happy to be present. Noah just sighed.

The queen entered, followed by her advisor. She took her spot at the end of the table, between the two princesses. The sevants proceeded to bring in food. Soon the table was filled with platers of food, and containers of wine. Plates, and glasses were delivered to the area on the table in front of each person. Before the dinner could begin the Queen spoke up. Noah why is it that you went around telling the cityfolk that vampires are about, you and I both know they do not exist, and one other thing who is this rabble that look as if they were to dine with us? Noah stood and slammed his fist on the table. Mother they are not simply rabble, this is Nell, Mordraken and Talione. Nell was attacked by those creatures that you claim do not exist, and these two are going to help me stop these attacks, and disappearances. How can you say they don't exist, you lost a husband AND a daughter to them, how many more before it makes you realize that they do exist. Noah sat again, as the queen stood. Do not take that tone with me boy, your father died of an illness, and your sister is dying of it. Noah stood again, Yes an illness, that I hope can be cured, however it's to late for me to cure those dear to me, for they have already passed. The illness was the undead and you know it. You know it, yet you do nothing about it, well I intend to. The people will suffer no more, fill your face mother. Fill your face with food you don't deserve. If a ruler doesn't protect it's people, then that person doesn't deserve to rule, and doesn't deserver the luxuries with it! Noah turned and stormed out the door. Spoiled little wretch. Why do I put up with this?

Noah walked quickly towards the war room. The whole time, the vampires words floated in his head, ...See you couldn't even protect yourself. What if he was right, was this the end. If he failed to protect his people, then he would fail to protect the world...

Talione followed after Magnus, somewhat bemused by the little man's assumption of authority. Sure I offered my services, but... Oh well. I don't know this city, so I might as well go along with him. Soon enough they entered a foul smelling tavern. At the bar was a group so-called Hunters drowning their sorrows in gallons of beer. In their midst sat Ed the Destructor, looking much the worse for the beating he had taken. The woodsman sat back in his chair, letting Magnus do all the talking. He smiled a little when he was labled as "Second in Command". Wonderful. Second in Command of an army of drunken idiots. These fools couldn't fight their way out of a beer mug let alone a pack of vampires!

Let's go, Talione. Talione smirked down at the monk. What? We have the beginnings of an army, right? I don't mean to be manipulative, but why shouldn't I push the advantage if I have it? Still smirking, Talione turns to the street. I have something that I have to do. I will meet you later. Then he was running up the street, keeping to the shadows as much as he could to shield his eyes from the sun.

After a short time he found what he was looking for. The tiny alchemist's shop was almost hidden down a back alley. Its worn sign creaked as it swayed gently on the breeze. Talione checked the street to see if he had been followed, and seeing no obvious tails, entered the shop. An old woman manned the counter, her white hair pinned up in a bun. Blind eyes stared at the doorway, and despite their dead white color, Talione felt she could still see him. Come in young man. I have been expecting you for some time now.

Taken aback, Talione slowly approached the counter. You know me?

I do not know who you are, but I do know what you are. And I know what you seek. The old woman smiled a gap toothed smile, then pulled a small bottle from the shelf behind her. This will help you for a time, help to keep the weakness at bay. When you need more, come to me.

Talione hesitantly took the bottle from her age scarred hands. For this I thank you. How much is owed?

When the time comes, you will repay me. Go now, someone is searching for you. Talione found himself shuffled from the store, hearing the door close behind him. He turned to ask what the woman's cryptic words meant, only to find a blank wall in front of him. Even the sign was gone. Shivering more than a little, he nearly jumped out of his skin when a hand closed on his shoulder.

Excuse me, sir, but the Prince has ask you to attend dinner at the castle. If you will follow me? Talione followed the messenger out of the alley, looking over his shoulder at the blank walls only once, then refusing to look back again.

Dinner was waiting when he arrived. A pretty young woman sat beside the prince. Talione felt a quiet stirring, but smashed it ruthlessly. Such longings are not for you! If she were to look upon you, she would most likely only see a demon, or worse, someone to pity. As soon as the queen arrived, it became obvious that all was not well with the royal family. Feeling far out of his depth, Talione kept silent as the Prince and his mother argued. The woman's willful stupidity sickened him, and as soon as the Noah stormed from the room, he stood. Your Highness, as the presense of "rabble" obviously offends your delicate nature, I at least will remove myself. One wouldn't want to intrude on your fantasies after all. Giving the sputtering Queen a courtly bow, Talione turned to the Prince's comely, and abandoned, dinner companion. Mi'lady, would you care to join me in my exit? he ask, offering her his arm.

Highness, as the presense of "rabble" obviously offends your delicate nature, I at least will remove myself. One wouldn't want to intrude on your fantasies after all, Mi'lady, would you care to join me in my exit?

Hmpf, such insolent little creatures, why does my son even associate with your type? She looked to the two gaurds, and nodded toward the door the prince left. they left immediately. She is no lady, get her out of my sight. Take that man with you, he bothers me. You know daughters, it is people like these who confuse my poor boy, and turn him against me. With that princess Ariana, and princess Iris got up suddenly and left from whence they came. The look of frustration upon their faces.

Noah walked into the war room, and went straightaway for the commander's desk. Upon his approach the comander looked up, recognizing the prince he stood and bowed. Commander, from now on, I want every report of vampires investigated. We cannot let this happen any longer, too many are disappearing. The commander sighed, As you wish sire. Personally I think it is about time we got rid of this threat, we couldn't keep the people in the dark forever you know? Noah nodded, I am suprised, it's only been 100 years, and already people are starting to doubt the legends, the presence of vampires has scarred this land twice before. Only ten years apart were the two attacks, however, this time it's been 100 years, think of how many there really are!? One thing is certain, we will have our hands full. Not just with vampires either, it seems the queen still wants this topic left in the dark. The commander had a look of concern on his face. What if she gave us orders to stop. The prince looked to the ground. Look my mother is a twit, she is used to being pampered and having everything her way, who do you think will rule in a few years. Me, so I suggest you follow my orders, if she gives you problems, then tell her to take it up with me. I am sick of her hiding the truth from everyone. The commander was still a bit worried, Aye sire, I am sure the men will be behind you. Some of them have lost family as well, and would love nothing more than to hunt down these creatures of the night.

Two royal guards entered the room. The prince's assigned guards, on him again.[color=red] Were you expecting them sire?
The commander pointed to the two new arrivals. Noah turned to see who it was, no commander, I wasn't, these two just never leave me alone. Hey, you two, go home for today, you need a break. Noah folded his arms across his chest. But sire! The quee.... I don't care, I said take the day off. They bowed and exited the room. The prince turned back to the commander, I expect great things from you commander Borus. Great things The commander seemed to gleam with hapiness, I shall try my best to live up to your expectations sire. Noah nodded, turned and left the room, as the commander started to jot notes down right-away.

I think I've known vampires who had better manners than that Queen, but as long as we keep our distances, she won't get in my way, though Magnus, as he was ordered to leave by the Queen. Feining ettiqute, he stood up and bowed. Farewell, Queen Dragonhand. I hope to prove you wrong about me and my compatriot. He left for quieter realms. On his way to the library, he passed the War Room. He figured he'd need to learn fast where it was, as he was going to be leading Ed and company as soon as they got their act together, and his involvement with strategy would be important. He decided to stand outside the doorway for a moment, just for the sake of seeing what was on the young Dragonhand's mind. Magnus heard him dismiss his guards, who came out as though they were wet dogs coming out of a rainstorm. One of them said quietly, Man, Sir Noah's gonna get chewed out by the Queen. The other answered, Well, you know, what can WE do about it? Their conversation died off as they headed down the hallway. Magnus met Noah as the latter came out, obviously with something on his mind. Mind if I ask you something, Prince Dragonhand?

Dinner with royalty was turning out to be rather the same as with many common families of the land. It seemed they were not immune to the squabbles and pettiness of family life.

At first she was relieved when Noah's entrance coincided with the rustle of skirts. Nell had never seen the sisters before and assumed they were the infamous Ariana and Iris. Out of courtesy and respect for their recent bereavement, Nell put to one side her anti-royal feelings and smiled and curtsied. She took the offered seat next to Noah and spoke in a low voice to him "I know this is totally inappropriate considering the circumstances but I am famished! I completely forgot to eat today. You will let me know if I am using the wrong fork, won't you?"

As she finished speaking, two men entered, both of unusual appearance, and sat opposite to her. The taller of the two wore a dark cloak which contrasted sharply with the snow white hair and pale face. And what appeared to be spectacles with coloured glass. Unable to see the expression in his eyes, Nell played safe and smiled at this young man. The shorter man with the dark hair and striking blue eyes, striking perhaps for their penetrating look, seemed to be wearing some sort of robe decorated with occasional symbols of which Nell had little knowledge. Again Nell smiled and inclined her head in greeting. However before Nell could introduce herself, a low rumble came from the regions of her belly. Coughing to try to cover her embarrassment, Nell saw the room begin to fill with other people? Statesmen? They were the precursors to the Queen herself. Nell rose from her seat and curtsied.

When the Queen had sat, Nell returned to her seat and watched the servants carrying in plates of tempting morsels. She restrained the groan of hunger that threatened to rise in her throat and waited patiently for dinner to be served. Alas it never was. Instead she witnessed the exchange of words between mother and son, and once Noah had left the room, silence hung in the air.

It was the sort of silence that one never knows how long to leave before breaking it. Fiddling with the napkin on her lap, Nell looked over to the two men, whose names she had learnt to be Magnus and Talione. Should they attempt to make conversation with the Queen. Protocol seemed to forbid it and Nell had assumed the Queens question of why she put up with Noah to be rhetorical. Trying to think of something to say to ease the tension, she was about to comment on the arrangement of the table setting when Talione saved the day by rising with quiet dignity. "Your Highness, as the presence of "rabble" obviously offends your delicate nature, I at least will remove myself. One wouldn't want to intrude on your fantasies after all" . Nell smiled inwardly and applauded Talione for his well chosen words. When he offered Nell his arm, she rose to accept it and allowed herself to be led out of the room, not allowing the Queen's insults to touch her. With pleasure she noted the rest of the company depart too, leaving the bitter woman alone at the table.

Outside the banqueting hall, however, Nell regretted the action. She had not eaten a single thing and the evening seemed to stretch before her and her empty stomach. Turning to Talione, she wondered if he had the same thought as her, but guessed not, what with him being a hunter type.

"Thank you for giving me a reason to leave. Wasn't that just awful? I am sorry, we have not been formally introduced, but my name is Nell and I am currently a temporary guest within this castle." She gave a brief curtsey and continued. "His highness referred to you as someone he had hired? I assume your business is to do with the vampires? How about we head down to the kitchens so I can raid the larders and you can tell me how you are connected to all this? I am starving!" With a cheeky grin, Nell moved forward with the vague sense that kitchens were usually at the bottom of a castle.

Noah left the commmander, Borus, to his business, and left the room. On the way out he spotted Magnus outside, he seemed to be waiting for him. Mind if I ask you something, Prince Dragonhand? Noah stopped in mid pace. I don't mind at all Magnus. Walk with me, I am on my way to the library, oh and I apologize for what happened at dinner today. Sometimes I wish I didn't have that woman as a mother. Anyhow, come let us make way. Noah started toward the library, with Magnus following. Now what were you going to ask?

Soon will be the time. The oppourtunity to present myself to the citizens of Astrail will present itself after the sun sets. These mortals will pay for banishing me so long ago. The vampires are playing right into my plan. This is perfect...

Talione found Nell's grin to be infectious, and grinned back. Yes, let's find the kitchens. At least there we won't have to deal with that bitter old shrew! Matching stride with someone so much shorter than he took some doing, and he took a few moments to find the proper rhythm. As for introductions, my name is Talione Pale. I'm a woodsman by trade, but hunting vampires is... well I guess you could call it a hobby? When I heard of all the disappearances, I decided to come to the city to investigate. When I arrived, I heard about the position of Champion Vampire Hunter, and decided that having royal sanction for my actions would make things easier. Of course, that was before I met the Queen. He realized that he was babbling and blushed. His white cheeks glowed with the sudden color. He quickly looking away, hoping Nell hadn't noticed. What the Hell is my problem tonight?

First he mouths off to a Queen, and now he was acting like a tongue tied kid. It wasn't exactly as if he was inexperienced with women, just that usually they took one look at his coloring and started making warding signs and throwing salt. Pull yourself together! You said you are a guest here? From the Queen's reaction, she wasn't any happier to see you than Magnus and I. Are you a... What do I say? ...um, a friend of the Princes'? Briefly, Talione considered getting his spear, in the hopes he could use it to pry his foot out of his mouth before he choked on it further. Gods I hope we get to the kitchen soon. At least there I can chew on something besides my boot.

The pair continued to hunt for the kitchens and it wasn't too long before their noses began to lead the way. Following the smell of roasted beef and other tempting aromas, they soon came across increasing numbers of servants leaving and entering another room through a wide swing door. These servants seemed engaged in particular tasks and ignored the two guests, passing them by, intent on their domestic missions. Waiting for a moment when the flow of bodies seemed to cease, Nell pushed on the door to reveal the massive kitchens of the castle.

Steam filled the air of the scene Nell took in, steam that seemed to emit not from the kitchen itself but an ante room that she assumed was the scullery. Voices were raised in temper as two cooks disputed why the latest meal had been returned untouched. On various work tops, carcasses of carved birds were left as if to rot and pots and pans lay tumbled in chaotic disarray. Seemingly invisible, Nell and Talione moved around the room, hunting for something to eat. Their luck was in as the plates of food originally served for dinner were returned. Starting to select from a platter of entrees, Nell answered Talione's question.

"Friend of the prince? Hmmm ... good question. I only met him this morning and he offered me protection within the castle. So, yes, I owe him a debt of gratitude for his interest in my case." Nell decided to tactfully sidestep Talione's bumbling question. She was warming to his courteous nature, his strange appearance not having any influence of her opinion of him. "It seems we have a common connection in that I am also here because of vampires. My father disappeared a few weeks ago. After fearing the worst, that he had been murdered, I discovered that there is something beyond the worst. My father came home last night, but he was no longer my father. He was a vampire." It felt strange to say that aloud, perhaps because no grief overwhelmed her at the thought. This was something for her to ponder later on when alone. "Anyway, Noah kindly offered me protection here as he is certain my father will come after me again."

Nell picked up a plate piled high with a variety of cut meats and fresh vegetables. She had spied in the corner of the room a door left ajar that seemed to lead outside. Pushing it open, she saw a small and slightly strange smelling courtyard and deciding that the yelling of the two cooks really wasn't conducive to conversation, nodded to Talione. "Shall we sit outside? The evening air is reasonably warm. And I would like to hear more of vampire hunting. Tell me, have you ever seen a vampire return to a natural state, a human state? And ... have you ever killed a person thinking they were a vampire?"

The Talione's sensitive was nearly overwhelmed by the sheer number of smells in the kitchen, nearly bringing tears to his eyes. The sound or the cooks arguing across the room nearly drowned out the industrious clanking and clatter of the busy kitchen. Talione was pleased to find the abandoned food from the aborted dinner, and used the time spent picking out dishes to pull himself together. "Friend of the prince? Hmmm ... good question. I only met him this morning and he offered me protection within the castle. So, yes, I owe him a debt of gratitude for his interest in my case." Grateful for Nell's tactful answer, Talione nodded his head for her to continue. He listened to Nell's story with mingled anger and horror. To have to face your own father as he tried to drain you! Hard to believe I'm thinking this, but at least my parents were mearly killed, not changed over! He found himself impressed by her calm manner. Most people would be stricken with grief, or worse, enraged beyond thought..

"Shall we sit outside? The evening air is reasonably warm. And I would like to hear more of vampire hunting. Tell me, have you ever seen a vampire return to a natural state, a human state? And ... have you ever killed a person thinking they were a vampire?" Talione couldn't help but laugh at her question. Pardon me, Lady, but usually it is others mistaking me for a vampire! He said, throwing back his hood, and removing his glasses. Eyes like twin pools of fresh-spilled blood stared out of his bone white face. A sheen of tears immediately blurred his vision, caused by the bright light spilling from the many lanterns. After all, vampires are monsters with pale white skin and glowing red eyes. He barely kept the edge of bitterness from his voice.

A passing scullery maid gasp as she looked at him, her eyes starting to glaze in fear as she hurried into the scullery. Talione quickly looked away, not wanting to see Nell's reaction. As for a vampire changing back to a human, I don't know if that is possible. Maybe if you got to them before they fed the first time, and had a powerful Healer with you. He placed an open wine bottle and a pitcher of water on a serving tray with his food, then wordlessly offered to carry Nell's dinner as well. I have hunted vampires for nearly 7 years now, and I will let you in on a little secret. Most vampires I've fought haven't had much combat training. They are too arrogant, trusting to their natural speed and strength, as well as their regenerative powers, to carry them in a fight. Against your average person I guess those advantages are enough though. The older ones are different of course. They have had to learn to fight in order to survive. He said as he followed her into the courtyard. The strange scent tickle his nose.

I don't mean to lecture, but as I said, vampires are a hobby of mine. Are you interested in becoming a Hunter? Some of the best Hunters I've met are women after all.

Stop me if I sound arrogant, but why is there a need for a standing army of Vampire Hunters? Talione, if he's as experienced as he seems like he is, and myself can easily keep any threat from becoming more than that. Magnus looked down at his feet a moment, thinking of what the prince's response might be. Then, he looked up again, realizing they were entering the library. Ah, excellent. Somewhere where we can talk without fear of retribution. The library was sweeping in scope, with a graceful arched cealing painted with a vibrant fresco. And the books! More books than Magnus could hope of reading in his entire lifespan. But anyway, is it that you expect something bigger from the Vampires, or do you have something else in mind?

The prince looked at Magnus. He must think pretty highly of himself. Noah led Magnus to the corner where he stacked all the books of vampires. He pulled out a book named The history of Astrail and the undead. He tossed the book to the man. The first time they invaded my land about 110 years ago, they nearly took it over. These vampires ae organized, they come in the form of an army when in full force. They invaded again 10 years after that, and managed to take this city, my people were forced underground. After forcing them back a 2nd time we had thought we eliminated the threat. Now they are arising again, and this time they have had 100 years to plan, and grow. It has been rather easy for them lately, considering the queen ignored cries for help from everywhere. All the disappearances make me uneasy. So yes we need as much help as we can get. I am not doubting either yours or Talione's skill, but there is all to many of them. Noah stopped with that, and turned to one of the other books. He sat down with it and started to pour over the information.

I don't mean to lecture, but as I said, vampires are a hobby of mine. Are you interested in becoming a Hunter? Some of the best Hunters I've met are women after all.

Nell smiled at the suggestion. A vampire hunter? Me? I doubt I have the skills for such work. She shook her head. It was all a bit fanciful, after all, she was just a common young woman. One of the people. Scouting around the courtyard she found two wooden buckets and turned them upside down to create make-shift stools. Indicating Talione to put the tray infront of them, she sat and looked at this strange man more closely. By the setting sun, he didn't seem quite as terrifying as he had first appeared in the kitchens. She had found it difficult to disguise her initial shock at his appearance and had been thankful that he had not seen her look of horror. It appeared that even now he was avoiding her look. She wondered at how he had lived his life before now. Ignorance and fear had probably driven most people from his society. Yet, he had a gentle and courteous manner. Probably few had stayed around long enough to find out.

No, I have limited fighting abilities. I was taught how to use a long bow from an early age but only in the pursuit of sport. The staff I can use for self-defence, a necessary thing in these times it appears. I am not sure I have the head or heart for killing. She busied herself with pouring out wine for both, adding water to hers to weaken it. Then she proceeded to start the process of sating her hunger. As she ate, she noticed the evening was gradually turning to darkness. They had neglected to bring a lantern out with them, but there was some light spilling from the kitchen door left ajar. It would have been a pleasant moment had it not been for the pungent aroma that hung in the air. It was perhaps no worse than an ordinary street which lacked a proper sewage system, but it irked the woman. She tried to stay focussed on the conversation in hand.

Unfortunately I do not know if my father has ... fed. He did not look particularly healthy. I drove him away easily and maybe that indicates he was in a weakened state? Her voice had grown quiet at speaking of her father again. But again it was a neutral voice. It was as if Nell had cut off from the reality of the situation. This stench is really becoming quite intolerable. I barely noticed it at first, but now ... it's like how a dripping of water from the gutter, when you are trying to sleep, is like a thunder boom? Is it my imagination, or is it getting worse?

She put her plate back onto the tray and began to investigate the corners of the courtyard, trying to track down the source. In the corner furtherest away of the small courtyard, by a high gate, were several wooden barrels. Here the smell was stronger. They were ordinary barrels that could contain flour or wine. Squatting down by one, she pressed her nose close.

Oh gods. It's coming from in here.
