American Dishes

Postby SoulDemon » Thu Jun 12, 2003 5:04 pm

Have a dish that can only be made in the good ol US of A? Something those stinkin' foreigners would snub their noses at? Plaster red white and blue seasonings and colorings in your food for a shot of patriotism? Post that dish here!

LOL, okies, I'll bite here, I actually DO have such a recipe, it has no official name, but if we must we can call it the "Baked Bean Wienie Roast Open Faced Sandwhich"

1 loaf of french bread (yes I recognize the irony) Cut in half lengthwise
1 can of baked beans, drained of most of the juice.
1 package of hotdogs butterflied (cut almost through length wise, but leave attached at long side, not short round ends)
Small sweet pickles, cut into fan shape (do this by cutting legthwise almost all the way through, but leaving a bit at the stem end and opening like a hand of cards
1 package of American cheese cut in triangles
Prepared mustard
Mayonaise
Any other condiments

ok, spread the bread with the baked beans, and lay the butterflied hot dogs, cut side UP on the beans, lay the cheese slices over and in between the hot dogs.
Broil or bake in oven or grill on BBQ, until cheese is melted and bubbly and beans and hot dogs are hot (note, while I have never had this happen, some people have complained that thier cheese burns before their beans and hot dogs are hot, if this happens to you, put cheese on to melt AFTER rest is done)
After you remove from heat, place fanned sweet pickles between hot dogs and cut and serve with condiments.

Pickled Eggs

Postby Blackfever » Fri Jul 11, 2003 11:06 pm

Not too sure this is *American Only* but... I DO think most people would snub their noses at!! Trust me, these are G R E A T!! : Pickled Eggs

2 dozen hard boiled eggs (peeled)
4 cups vinegar (typical white will work fine)
1 good sized onion
1 can or jar of jalapenos (peppercinis work good too if you like it not so hot!)
GARLIC (however much you can stand!)
some baby carrots if you like em (they pickle nicely)
1 cup of water
1 tablespoons of tabasco or similar (2 if you like it hot)
1 tablespoon of salt
Pepper is always nice!

Bring ingredients to a boil. In a sealable jar (large) pour over the peeled (cooked) eggs. Let sit for 3 days to 3 months.

I like to eat my eggs with a bite of onion. The onion will break apart and seperate into slices, just the right size for the egg!

ENJOY

Do you actually need to seal the jar as in canning, or just twist a lid on?

Well, I used a large jar with a screw on lid, but it kinda needs to seal a bit too... It doesn't call for a **canning** jar, just a jar with a good lid. Kinda long winded, but I hope that answers the question! hehe
